Health Technology Assessments (HTA) asks important questions about technologies such as drugs, devices or procedures such as ‘When is counselling better than drug treatment for depression?’.
Four main factors are considered to answer these questions: whether the technology works, for whom, at what cost, and how it compares with the alternatives.
Our experience
We have been involved in the conduct of over 100 HTAs for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK and dozens more for commissioners such as the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) in Germany, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) in Switzerland, or the Dutch National Health Care Institute.
These have covered a wide range of healthcare areas and have informed decision making in the UK, EU, and elsewhere (see publications). We are UK leaders in producing HTAs of diagnostic technologies, having completed 16 diagnostic appraisals for NICE, all of which were published in peer review journals.
Informing healthcare decisions
Why choose KSR?
Our health technology assessments HTAs have supported policy-making commissioning health services, and fourth hurdle processes (such as for NICE and IQWiG in Germany). We are also a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for Technology Assessment Reviews by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). In this capacity we are involved in providing Technology Assessment Reviews (TARs) for policy customers including NICE.
As well as carrying out world-class health technology assessment, we offer a range of support services such as training in the methods and the processes of HTA agencies, particularly with relation to NICE methods. This includes the organising of mock appraisal committee meetings and technical advice for evidence submissions.
